Morocco in AprilThe Month Everything Works
If you can only come once and you want nothing to go wrong, come in April. The cities are warm and not hot, the desert is still kind, the mountains have opened up to walkers, and the north has finally dried out. Everyone else knows this too, which is the only drawback.
What the weather actually does
| Region | Days | Nights | Rain |
|---|---|---|---|
| Marrakech | 25 to 28°C | 12 to 14°C | Rare |
| Sahara, Merzouga | 29 to 32°C | 13 to 16°C | None, some wind |
| High Atlas, Imlil | 16 to 19°C | 5 to 8°C | Snow above 3,000 m |
| Atlantic coast, Essaouira | 20 to 22°C | 13 to 15°C | Windy, bright |
What April is good for
City, desert and mountain
April is the only part of the year when a single trip can comfortably take in Fes, the Sahara and a mountain valley without one leg of it being too hot or too cold.
The season opens
Valleys and passes below 3,000 metres clear of snow. Toubkal is possible late in the month with crampons and a guide, and the M’Goun from May.
Two weeks of colour
Poppies and yellow broom across the Middle Atlas, and the argan country south of Essaouira turns green in a way it will not be again until winter.
The one thing to plan around
April is high season, and Easter concentrates it. Riads in Fes and Marrakech fill six to eight weeks ahead, the good desert camps go first, and prices sit 20 to 40 percent above February. If your dates are fixed, book early. If your dates are flexible, the first ten days of April and the last week are usually calmer than the middle.
What is on in April
The Marathon des Sables crosses the southern desert in April, six days and around 250 kilometres on foot. You do not have to run it to feel it: the region around Ouarzazate and the Draa fills with runners and support teams for a week.
In the villages, April is the almond and cherry harvest in the lower valleys, and the moment the flocks start moving up towards the high pastures. Walk a valley now and you will cross herds going the other way.
April nights are still cold in the desert and the mountains, even when the day hit 30°C. People pack for the daytime photograph and shiver at dinner. One warm layer and a scarf solves it.
So is April a good time to come?
It is the best month of the year, together with October, and the one we recommend to first time visitors without hesitation. The only cost is that you share it and you pay for it. Book early, avoid the Easter fortnight if you can, and April will give you Morocco with nothing working against you.
