Erg Chebbi & Erg ChegagaThe Call of
The Desert
You leave Marrakech over the Tizi n’Tichka, lose the last village after Ouarzazate, and reach the sand in the hour when it turns from gold to rose. A camel carries you over the first ridge, and on the far side the camp is already lit.
- Camel trek over the dunes at golden hour
- Private camp, proper beds, hot water and a fire
- Dinner under a sky with no light pollution
Toubkal, Mgoun, Aït BouguemezWalking the
High Atlas
Mohamed, who founded Afsou Travels, was born in the Atlas mountains and knew these paths before he could read a map. Mules carry the loads, you carry a day bag, and the villages you sleep in are ones we have known for twenty five years.
- Toubkal at 4,167m, or gentler valley walking
- Berber mountain guides from the valleys themselves
- Mules and a cook, so you walk with a day bag
Fes, Meknes, Rabat, MarrakechFour Cities,
Twelve Centuries
Fes was founded in 789 and has never stopped working. We walk the four cities with historians and craftsmen rather than flag-carriers, and we time each medina for the hour it is worth seeing.
- Fes el Bali on foot, before the crowds reach it
- Tanneries, brass and cedar workshops still in use
- Private access where a licence is needed
Essaouira, Oualidia, TaghazoutWind, Fish and
Blue Shutters
Two and a half hours west of Marrakech the air changes. Essaouira is a walled port where the boats still land at four and the quay smells of grilled sardines; north of it Oualidia farms oysters, south of it Taghazout surfs.
- The ramparts and the fishing port at the hour the fleet lands
- Lunch chosen off the ice and grilled in front of you
- Argan cooperatives run by women’s collectives
Marrakech & the Ourika valleyA Morning in
a Real Kitchen
It starts in the souk at eight, choosing what you will cook from the stalls the house buys from. Then a garden kitchen outside the city, a dada who has cooked all her life, and four hours that end with everyone eating what they made.
- Market shopping with the cook, not a shopping list
- Tagine, bread, salads and mint tea from scratch
- Taught by a Moroccan dada in her own kitchen
Merzouga, Mhamid, AgafayTravelling at
Walking Pace
A loaded camel walks at about four kilometres an hour, which turns out to be exactly the right speed for the Sahara. Go out for an hour before sunset from Merzouga, or take three days with a caravan across the Chegaga dunes.
- An hour at sunset, or a caravan of several days
- Cameleers who have worked these dunes all their lives
- Blankets, tea and a fire at the far end
The Agafay & the palm grovesDust, Stone
and Palm
The Agafay is a stone desert rather than a sand one, and it begins twenty-five minutes from the Marrakech ring road. A briefing, a helmet, a guide riding ahead, then two hours of dry riverbeds and Berber tracks with the Atlas on the skyline.
- A guide on every ride, never a thirty-machine convoy
- Automatic machines, no experience needed
- The Agafay plateau or the palm groves north of the city
North of MarrakechThe Plain at
First Light
You are collected in the dark and in the air before the sun is. From a thousand feet the plain reads like a map, with the Atlas turning pink along the whole southern edge and breakfast waiting in a Berber tent.
- Collected from your riad well before dawn
- About an hour aloft over the plain and the villages
- Licensed operators and certified pilots only
The medina, on footMarrakech
After Dark
Jemaa el Fna fills with smoke at dusk and most visitors eat the first thing they are waved towards. We walk past it: six or seven stops across an evening, ending at the pastry shop that is only worth it after nine.
- Six or seven tasting stops, all on foot
- The square, and the lanes the square hides
- A guide who eats here, not a script
A family kitchen in the medinaThe Oven on
the Corner
Almost every Moroccan neighbourhood still has a communal wood oven, and almost every household still carries its dough there on a board. You mix and shape khobz, batbout and msemen, then walk your tray down to the furnace.
- Khobz, batbout and msemen made from scratch
- Taught in a family kitchen, not a demonstration room
- Carry your own tray to the neighbourhood oven
Royal Mansour · MarrakechAn Afternoon of
Tea and Pastry
Mid afternoon, when the light goes long and the city finally slows down, you sit in the courtyard of the Royal Mansour and let someone else do the pouring. Mint tea, a tiered stand of Moroccan pastries, and an hour with nothing to do in it. We book the table and get you there. The rest is sitting still.
- A table booked ahead, so nothing is left to chance
- Moroccan pastries, and tea poured the way it should be
- Easy to put after a morning in the medina
Palmeraie · MedinaMarrakech from
a Sidecar
You sit low, with the city at eye level. Out through the palm groves north of town, past the irrigation channels and the red walls, then back in along streets you would never have found on foot. Someone else takes the handlebars. You take the seat, and the wind, and the stopping wherever it looks worth stopping.
- A vintage sidecar with your own driver
- The palmeraie first, then the quieter side of the medina
- Best at the start or the very end of the day
