The Thrill of The Open Desert
The Thrill of
The Open Desert
Quad biking near Marrakech is the fast half day. Thirty minutes from the city the ground turns to rock and pale dust and the Agafay opens out: a stone desert, not a sand one, with the High Atlas standing along the whole southern horizon. You get a briefing, a machine each and a guide who rides ahead across the plateau, down into the dry riverbeds and past the shepherd camps.
It is the thing to book when you are travelling with teenagers, or when you want one loud afternoon in the middle of an otherwise unhurried trip. The machines are automatic and no licence is needed, so people who have never ridden anything are riding confidently within ten minutes.
What You Will Do
- One machine per rider, automatic, no licence required
- Helmet, goggles and a full briefing before you set off
- Two hours of riding across the Agafay plateau and its dry riverbeds
- Mint tea in a Berber tent at the halfway stop
Agafay or the Palm Groves
The Agafay is the better ride: open plateau, real distance, and the Atlas in view the whole way. The Marrakech palm groves are closer to town, greener and gentler, with tracks running between the palms and small villages. If you have half a day, take the Agafay. If you have two hours and are staying in the medina, the palmeraie makes more sense.
Safety, and Who Should Not Ride
Everyone gets a helmet and goggles, and the briefing covers throttle, brake and how to take a bend on loose surface. Riders must be sixteen or over to drive alone; younger children ride as passengers with a guide, or take a buggy with a parent driving. The dust is the main discomfort, so ride near the front of the group and keep your goggles on.
How It Fits the Rest of the Day
Most people ride in the late afternoon and stay on for dinner in one of the Agafay camps, which puts sunset over the Atlas at the end of the ride rather than in the middle of it. We can also pair it with a morning in the medina, or run it on the day you transfer toward the Sahara, since the Agafay sits on that road anyway.
