Morocco in MarchThe Country at Its Greenest
March is the month Morocco turns green. Winter rain has done its work, the valleys are full of grass and wildflowers, the waterfalls are running hard, and the cities are warm without being hot. It is also the last month before the high season, which shows in what you pay.
What the weather actually does
| Region | Days | Nights | Rain |
|---|---|---|---|
| Marrakech | 23 to 25°C | 10 to 12°C | A few spring showers |
| Sahara, Merzouga | 25 to 28°C | 8 to 11°C | Rare, but wind possible |
| High Atlas, Imlil | 14 to 16°C | 2 to 5°C | Snow still above 2,500 m |
| Atlantic coast, Essaouira | 19 to 21°C | 12 to 14°C | Windy |
What March is good for
Waterfalls at full flow
Ouzoud, the Ourika cascades and the Todra stream are all fed by snowmelt and rain. By July they are a trickle. In March they are the reason to go.
Valley trekking opens
Everything below about 2,500 metres is walkable and covered in flowers. Aiat Bouguemez, the Ourika, the Jbel Saghro traverse in the south.
Still shoulder season
Until the Easter holidays arrive, riads and guides cost what they cost in winter, with April weather. It is the best value fortnight of the year.
Where to go
The Atlas foothills. The Ourika and Aiat Bouguemez valleys are at their best: green terraces, walnut trees coming into leaf, snow still on the peaks above. You walk in a jumper and eat lunch outside.
The desert, before the wind. March is still comfortable in the Sahara, with nights that no longer freeze. Late in the month the first sand winds can blow for a day or two, which is worth planning a flexible day around.
The north, finally. Chefchaouen and the Rif dry out and turn spectacular, and Tangier is pleasant without the summer crowds.
What is on in March
Nowruz and the spring equinox mark the farming year in the mountain villages: fields are prepared, lambs arrive, and the terraces are worked by hand. If you walk a valley in March you are walking through a working landscape, not a scenic one.
Depending on the year, Ramadan may fall in March. It changes nothing about whether you should come, but it changes the shape of the day, and Eid al-Fitr at the end of it is the biggest family celebration of the year. Ask us for the dates before you fix flights.
Take a waterproof and walking shoes with grip. March gives you the greenest country of the year, and it gives you that by raining on it occasionally. A shower in the Ourika lasts an hour and leaves the air washed clean.
So is March a good time to come?
It is one of the two or three best months of the year, and the most underrated. You get spring temperatures, full waterfalls, flowering valleys and winter prices. Bring a light layer for the evenings and accept an occasional shower, and March will give you the Morocco that the summer visitors never meet.
