Morocco in NovemberHarvest, Quiet and First Snow
November is October without the crowds or the prices. The days are a few degrees cooler, the nights a few degrees colder, and everything else is the same: clear air, open roads, comfortable desert and mountains that have just taken their first snow. It is the month we quietly recommend to people who want the country to themselves.
What the weather actually does
| Region | Days | Nights | Rain |
|---|---|---|---|
| Marrakech | 22 to 24°C | 11 to 13°C | A few wet days |
| Sahara, Merzouga | 24 to 26°C | 9 to 12°C | Almost none |
| High Atlas, Imlil | 14 to 16°C | 3 to 5°C | Snow above 2,500 m |
| Atlantic coast, Essaouira | 21 to 22°C | 14 to 16°C | Some showers |
What November is good for
The busiest month in the villages
Whole families are in the groves with nets and sticks, and the presses run day and night. Walk a valley in November and you will be handed bread and new oil.
Warm days, no crowds
Twenty five degrees at midday and dunes without another set of footprints. The nights turn genuinely cold by the end of the month.
Autumn without the premium
Prices drop back towards winter levels from the second week, while the weather is still autumn. The best value fortnight after March.
Where to go
The desert and the south are the heart of a November trip. The imperial cities are comfortable for full days of walking for the first time since spring, and the Middle Atlas around Ifrane and Azrou turns properly autumnal, with cedar forests and Barbary macaques.
High trekking is closing rather than closed. Toubkal is possible in early November in good conditions, and by the end of the month it needs winter equipment. Valley walking continues all winter.
What is on in November
Two national holidays fall this month: the Green March on 6 November and Independence Day on 18 November. Expect flags, closed administrative offices and busy domestic travel around both, but nothing that affects a trip.
Bring one more warm layer than you think November needs. Days feel like a European September and nights like a European November, and the gap between the two catches people out in the desert and the mountains alike.
So is November a good time to come?
Yes, and it is the month we would choose ourselves. You get October weather in the south, the villages at their most alive, empty dunes and prices that have come back down. Unless you have your heart set on a high summit, November is close to the ideal compromise.
