- Your Morocco Honeymoon Guide to Planning
After 25 years guiding travellers through Morocco, I have welcomed dozens of honeymooning couples. The ones who plan well come back telling me it was the most beautiful trip of their lives. this honeymoon guide gives you everything you need to plan a Morocco honeymoon that is as romantic, luxurious and personal as you want it to be.
Why Morocco: Where This Honeymoon Guide Starts
Morocco offers something very rare for a honeymoon destination. It is truly exotic and different from anywhere in Europe or North America, but it is also completely accessible. No long haul flights from Europe. No extreme conditions. No complicated visas. Just memorable landscapes, rare food, remarkable hospitality and a culture that takes beauty seriously in a way that very few places in the world still do.
The variety is also remarkable. In one trip you can move from the sensory richness of a Marrakech medina to the silence of the Sahara desert to the blue painted streets of Chefchaouen to the Atlantic ocean breeze of Essaouira. No other destination of this size offers such dramatic changes in landscape, atmosphere and experience.
The Most Romantic Destinations
Marrakech
The city of roses. Stay in a beautifully restored riad in the old medina with a private rooftop terrace. Watch the sunset from the Koutoubia gardens. Dine by candlelight in a 16th century palace. Take a private cooking class together in a traditional kitchen. Marrakech at night is one of the most atmospheric places in the world.
Sahara Desert
Nothing compares to a night in the Sahara with the person you love. A private luxury camp in the dunes, a candlelit dinner on the sand, a camel trek at golden hour and a sky so full of stars it does not look real. This is the moment most honeymoon couples say they will never forget for the rest of their lives.
Chefchaouen
The blue city is extraordinarily photogenic and surprisingly intimate. Wander the painted blue streets together, stop for mint tea in a quiet square, watch the sun set over the Rif Mountains from the Spanish mosque. Chefchaouen moves slowly and that is exactly what a honeymoon needs.
Essaouira
The Atlantic coastal town is where Morocco exhales. Walk the ancient ramparts with the ocean wind in your face, eat the freshest fish you have ever tasted at the harbour, spend lazy afternoons in boutique riads within the fortified medina walls. Essaouira is the perfect place to slow down together.
Atlas Mountains
The High Atlas offer memorable scenery and complete privacy. Stay in a luxury mountain lodge with views across snow capped peaks. Take a private guided walk through Berber villages where hospitality is a way of life. The Atlas is for couples who want beauty, fresh air and a sense of real adventure on their honeymoon.
Fes
The oldest imperial city in Morocco is also the most layered and fascinating. Stay in a restored palace riad in the heart of the medina, take a private tour of the medieval tanneries and artisan workshops, dine in a 14th century courtyard under a star shaped skylight. Fes rewards couples who love history, culture and beauty.
Marrakech: Two or Three Nights, Not Five
Marrakech is thrilling and it is also loud, hot and relentless. Two full days is enough to see the palaces, the gardens and the souks properly and to have one striking rooftop dinner. Five nights and most couples start looking for the exit. Book a riad with a private terrace, spend the mornings out and the afternoons horizontal, and treat the city as an opening rather than a base.
The Coast: Essaouira, Not Agadir
Agadir is a package resort city rebuilt after the 1960 earthquake and it has very little Morocco left in it. Essaouira, three hours west of Marrakech, is an eighteenth century walled port with a working fishing fleet, blue shutters, thuya woodworkers and fourteen kilometres of beach. It is windy, which keeps it cool in summer and makes it a kitesurfing town, and it is the single most relaxing place on the standard Morocco map.
Erg Chegaga
Two hours off the tarmac, far larger than Erg Chebbi and with a fraction of the camps. A private dinner on these dunes is truly private, which is the whole point.
Erg Chebbi
Reachable in a long day from Marrakech and served by the best luxury camps in Morocco. Busier, but easier, and the dunes are just as tall.
The Ourika and Ouirgane valleys
One hour from Marrakech, ten degrees cooler, with river side lodges and no crowds. A perfect two night pause between the city and the desert.
Adding Fes and Chefchaouen
Both are wonderful and both are a long way north. Adding them to a nine day Morocco honeymoon means two extra travel days. Save them for a second trip or add four days.
The Perfect Morocco Honeymoon Itinerary
| Days | Destination | Highlights |
|---|---|---|
| Days 1 and 2 | Marrakech | Private riad, rooftop dinner, souks, Majorelle Garden, cooking class |
| Day 3 | Atlas Mountains | Private drive through the High Atlas passes, Berber village lunch, Ait Benhaddou kasbah |
| Days 4 and 5 | Sahara Desert | Luxury desert camp, private camel trek at sunset, candlelit dinner on the dunes, stargazing |
| Day 6 | Return via Dades Valley | Rose Valley, Dades Gorge, Todra Gorge, scenic drive |
| Days 7 and 8 | Chefchaouen | Blue city, Rif Mountains walk, intimate riad, slow mornings |
| Days 9 and 10 | Essaouira | Atlantic coast, ramparts, fresh seafood, beach walks, relaxation |
The Route We Recommend Most Often
Two nights Marrakech, three nights Essaouira, one night in the Draa valley, two nights at Erg Chegaga, one final night back in Marrakech. Nine days, four places, one long driving day, and the trip builds rather than flattens: city, ocean, oasis, desert, and a last dinner in a courtyard before the flight home.
Tell your riad and your camp that it is a Morocco honeymoon at the time of booking, not on arrival. Moroccan hospitality takes this seriously and a week of notice is the difference between a standard room and the best room in the house, with the terrace and the fruit and the note from the owner.
Where to Stay on a Morocco Honeymoon
The accommodation you choose makes a profound difference to the romance of a Morocco honeymoon. Here is what to look for at each type of destination.
In the Cities
Choose a boutique riad in the medina rather than a hotel outside it. A riad is a traditional Moroccan house built around a central courtyard with a fountain. The best ones have been beautifully restored with zellige tilework, carved cedar wood, hand painted plaster and rooftop terraces with views across the medina. They are intimate, quiet and completely different from any hotel experience you have had before. Request a suite with a private terrace or a room with a hammam for the most romantic experience.
In the Desert
The luxury desert camps have transformed in recent years. The best camps now offer proper beds, en suite bathrooms, electricity and exceptionally good food, all within a tented setting that still feels truly wild and remote. Request a private tent away from any other guests. The best camps place couples at a distance from other travellers so you truly feel alone in the desert.
In the Mountains
Mountain lodges in the High Atlas offer some of the most spectacular views in Morocco. Look for properties with private terraces, fireplaces for cool evenings and access to trails that you can walk together without a crowd. Several lodges in the Ourika Valley and around Imlil offer exactly this.
Romantic Experiences Not to Miss
Private Hammam for Two
A traditional Moroccan hammam is one of the most intimate and relaxing experiences you can share as a couple. A private hammam session in a luxury riad is the perfect way to start or end a day in Marrakech or Fes. Scrubs, argan oil treatments and complete relaxation in a beautifully tiled private space.
Sunset Camel Trek into the Dunes
Riding into the Sahara together on camelback as the sun turns the dunes gold and amber is one of those experiences that becomes a story you tell for the rest of your lives. Every couple who does this says the same thing afterwards. It exceeded every expectation.
Private Cooking Class
Learning to cook Moroccan food together in a traditional kitchen is one of the most enjoyable ways to spend a morning. You visit the souk together to choose your ingredients, then cook a full Moroccan meal under the guidance of a local cook. You eat what you made on the rooftop terrace together afterwards.
Best Time to Go: The Honeymoon Guide Calendar
April and October are the two best months for a Morocco honeymoon. The weather is perfect everywhere, the light is golden and the summer crowds are either not yet arrived or already gone. The rose harvest in the Dades Valley happens in April and is one of the most beautiful natural events in Morocco. The desert in October has warm days, cool nights and a clarity to the air that makes the stars remarkable.
March and November are also excellent. December and January are beautiful in Marrakech but the desert nights are very cold, so pack warm layers if you are going to the Sahara in winter.
The most romantic honeymoons in Morocco are the ones that move at their own pace. Do not try to see everything. Choose four or five places and spend real time in each one. The memory of sitting on a rooftop in Chefchaouen watching the sunset with nowhere to be is worth more than ticking ten destinations off a list.
On a Morocco Honeymoon, Pick Two Places, Not Five
The most common Morocco honeymoon mistake in Morocco is treating it like a tour. Ten days, six hotels, four long drives, and a couple who arrive home needing a holiday. The country is large and the roads are slow, so every place you add costs you half a day of packing, driving and checking in, taken from the part of the trip you actually wanted. Two bases with a third short stay is the shape that works, and it is what we build for almost every couple who asks.
In practice that means one city, one landscape, and one indulgence. The city gives you the medina, the food and the sense of arriving somewhere really different. The landscape gives you the photographs and the silence, whether that is the dunes, the Atlas or the Atlantic. The indulgence is where you spend the last two nights doing nothing at all, which is the part most couples underrate and every couple thanks us for afterwards.
Four Morocco Honeymoon Combinations That Work
Marrakech, Agafay, Atlas
Three nights in a riad, two under canvas in the Agafay stone desert forty minutes from the city, then two in an Atlas lodge with a fire. Almost no driving, three completely different atmospheres, and a stargazing night without the ten hour journey the Sahara requires. Best from October to April.
Marrakech, Skoura, Merzouga
If the great dunes are non negotiable, break the drive properly. Two nights Marrakech, one in a palm grove kasbah near Skoura, two at a luxury camp in the Erg Chebbi, then fly home from Fes rather than doubling back. Choose this for the scenery and accept two long driving days as the price.
Fes, Chefchaouen, Atlantic
The quieter Morocco honeymoon. Three nights in a Fes merchant palace, two in the blue streets of Chefchaouen, then three on the coast at Essaouira or further north. Cooler in summer than the interior, far fewer visitors than the Marrakech circuit, and the best option for July and August.
Marrakech and Agafay in five nights
For couples with a week including flights. Three nights medina, two nights desert camp, one hammam each, two dinners booked and nothing else on the schedule. It sounds modest and it is consistently the version people describe as perfect, because nothing in it is rushed.
The Details That Make It Feel Like a Honeymoon
Not petals on the bed. What couples actually remember is a private dinner on a riad terrace with the medina calling to prayer below, a hammam booked for two so nobody else is in the building, breakfast served late on the roof because we told the kitchen to expect you at ten rather than eight, and one afternoon with absolutely nothing planned. We arrange all of that quietly rather than announcing it, and we tell every property in advance so the welcome is warm without being performed at you.
Bring one outfit each that works for a good dinner, because several of the best rooms in Marrakech and Fes are more formal than a riad breakfast suggests. Otherwise pack light, leave space for the rug you did not plan to buy, and let us handle the parts that would otherwise become admin. A honeymoon should have exactly two decisions in it per day, and both of them should be about food.
