About Agafay Desert

A Desert
Without the Drive

Agafay Desert is not the Sahara and it does not pretend to be. There are no dunes here. It is a hamada, a stone desert of rolling grey and ochre hills, cut by dry riverbeds and backed by the snow line of the High Atlas, and it begins about forty five minutes from the Jemaa el Fna.

That proximity is the entire point. If you have three or four days in Marrakech and cannot spare the two days of driving that Erg Chebbi requires, Agafay Desert gives you a real desert night, a sky full of stars and a sunrise over an empty landscape, and has you back in the city for breakfast.

It has also become the most heavily developed desert in Morocco, with dozens of camps at every price point. Which camp you choose matters far more here than it does at Erg Chebbi, and we are direct with clients about which ones we use.

Agafay Desert Quick Facts

DistanceAbout 30 km south west of Marrakech, 45 minutes by road, no 4×4 required for most camps.

Best SeasonOctober to May. Summer afternoons exceed 40C with no shade anywhere.
Best ForA one night desert experience, a sunset dinner, or a half day of quad biking and camel riding.

Versus the SaharaAgafay is convenient, the Sahara is memorable. If you have the days, go to Erg Chebbi or Chegaga instead.

What to Do
in the Agafay Desert

Agafay Desert is about the landscape and the light rather than about sights. Five ways to use it.

A Sunset Dinner on the Ridge

The single best thing Agafay Desert offers. A table set on a hilltop as the Atlas turns pink behind you, then dinner by lantern with no other light for kilometres.

One Night in a Luxury Camp

Ensuite tents, heated in winter, with a pool at the better camps. Enough for a honest desert night without losing two days to driving.

Camel or Horse at Golden Hour

An hour out across the hamada in the last light. Shorter and less romantic than the Sahara, but really beautiful when the sun is low.

Quad Biking and Buggies

Agafay Desert is the main quad biking area near Marrakech. Good fun for teenagers, and the one desert activity that works in the middle of the day.

Lalla Takerkoust Lake

Twenty minutes away, a reservoir under the Atlas with lakeside restaurants. A natural pairing with an Agafay Desert afternoon.

The Night Sky

Far darker than Marrakech and close enough to reach for dinner. Bring a jacket; the temperature drops fast once the sun is gone.

Agafay Desert Experiences

How to Do
The Agafay Desert Well

Four things that separate a good Agafay night from a disappointing one.

01

Go for One Night, Not Two

Agafay is a landscape rather than a destination. One night is perfect; two is usually one too many unless you are here to do nothing at all.

02

Choose the Camp Carefully

Camps here range from excellent to truly poor and the photographs look identical. Ask how many tents there are; under twenty is the number that matters.

03

Avoid Midsummer Afternoons

There is no shade in a stone desert. From June to September, arrive after five and leave before ten in the morning.

04

Do Not Substitute It for the Sahara

If your trip allows five days, go to Erg Chebbi instead. Agafay is the right answer when it does not.

Planning Your Visit

When to Visit the Agafay Desert
Agafay

Agafay sits at around 700 metres with no shade and no water. Season matters more here than almost anywhere else near Marrakech.

AutumnBest Time

October and November. Warm days around 25C, cool clear nights and the Atlas often already dusted with snow.

SpringExcellent

March to May. The hamada briefly greens after the rains and the light is at its best for photography.

WinterCold Nights

December to February. Beautiful and empty by day, but nights fall close to freezing. Heated tents are essential.

SummerToo Hot

June to September. Above 40C with no shade at all. Sunset dinners still work; daytime does not.
