The Summits of The High Atlas
The Summits of
The High Atlas
The High Atlas Mountains rise to 4,167 metres at the summit of Toubkal, the highest point in North Africa and the second highest on the African continent. But these mountains are far more than a single summit. They are a world of hidden valleys, ancient Amazigh Berber villages built from clay and stone, terraced fields of saffron and walnut trees, and paths that only the local guides know. The silence up here is the kind that is very hard to find anywhere in the modern world.
We have been guiding private mountain treks in the High Atlas for over 25 years. Our certified bilingual guides were born in these mountains and know every path, every family and every season. They know which valley to take when the main route is crowded, which guesthouse serves the best harira soup on a cold morning, and exactly where to stand to see the sun hit the summit of Toubkal at dawn. Every trek is designed around your fitness level, the time you have and what interests you most.
For those who want to summit Toubkal, we allow two full days of acclimatisation in the Imlil Valley before the ascent. We stay at the Neltner Refuge at 3,207 metres the night before the summit push and reach the top before any other trekking group has left base camp. For those who prefer valley trekking over summit climbing, the Mgoun Massif crossing is one of the great multi day walks in North Africa: five days through valleys where no road has ever reached and where Berber life continues as it has for centuries.
What You Will Do on This Mountain Trekking Experience

- Overnight stays in traditional Berber mountain guesthouses and at the Neltner Refuge on the Toubkal route
- Two full days of acclimatisation in the Imlil Valley before any high altitude ascent
- Mule team support for all luggage on every multi day route
- A trek cook who prepares three fresh mountain meals per day at camp, including traditional tagine and harira
- Optional visit to the Ourika Valley and the high altitude saffron fields of Taliouine
- Ait Bougumez Valley option: the hidden valley of the High Atlas, rarely visited and extraordinarily beautiful
How Hard Is Mountain Trekking in the Atlas, Really
Most Mountain Trekking Experience in the High Atlas is walking, not climbing. There is no rope, no technical ground and no exposure on the standard routes, including Toubkal. What there is, is altitude and time on your feet: five to seven hours a day, ascents of six hundred to a thousand metres, and a summit day on Toubkal that starts at five in the morning and takes ten hours.
The honest test is this: if you can walk for six hours in hilly country at home, carrying nothing but water, and get up and do it again the next day, you can do a Toubkal trek. If you cannot, the Ait Bouguemez valley and the Mgoun foothills give you the same landscape and the same villages at half the effort, and we send more people there than to the summit.
Who Carries What, and Where You Sleep
You carry a day pack: water, a layer, a camera, lunch. Mules carry everything else, including your main bag, the tents if we are camping, the kitchen and the food. The muleteers are from the valleys you walk through and they arrive at camp long before you do.
Nights are in village guesthouses, mountain refuges or tents, depending on the route. Guesthouses mean a mattress on a carpeted floor in a family home, a shared bathroom and the best tagine of the trip. The Toubkal refuges are dormitories with bunks and a canteen, busy in summer. Tents are for the Mgoun and Saghro crossings, where there is nothing else, and they are two person tents with proper mats.
When to Go Mountain Trekking, Month by Month
April to June and September to October are the best windows for High Atlas Mountain Trekking Experience. The snow line has retreated, the valleys are green, the days are long and the nights are cold but manageable. June is the finest month in the Ait Bouguemez, when the fields are cut and the walnut trees are in full leaf.
July and August work at altitude but the valleys below 2,000 metres are hot. November to March means winter conditions on Toubkal: crampons, an ice axe and a guide qualified for it, which we arrange, or you go lower. The Saghro and the Siroua are winter ranges and come into their own exactly when the High Atlas closes down, which is why we run them from November to March.
What to Bring for a Trek in the Atlas
Broken in boots, and that word matters more than the brand. Layers rather than one warm thing: it can be 28 degrees at midday and near freezing at 3,200 metres before dawn. A windproof shell, a fleece, a hat and gloves even in June. Two litres of water capacity, sun cream at strength, and a head torch for the refuges.
A sleeping bag if we are camping, which we can supply. Cash in small notes for the village shops and the tea stops, because there are no cards above the road head. And one thing people forget: a second pair of light shoes for the evening, because taking the boots off at camp is the best moment of the day.

My 2nd trek with Authentic Travel Tour [now Afsou Travels Morocco] and with Mohamed, this time at Toubkal. Mohamed is a great guide, kind, very professional and attentive to all. Everything is perfectly organized and the scenery is beautiful. I recommend 100%.
We did a 6 day Trek to Toubkal with Mohamed. That was really great. Mohamed is an excellent guide and he bent over backwards so that everything went well for the whole group of 16 people. I highly recommend.
Super Trek away from the roads that took us through authentic Berber villages with sublime scenery, great organization and tasty, excellent and abundant traditional local cuisine. Many thanks to Mohamed and all his team.
